Chapter 2691: Hospitalized

"Have any of you seen Yuan lately?" Wu Wang asked his squad members after their mission briefing ended.

"No, I haven’t." Shi Fa shook his head.

The others also shook their head.

"I heard that he’d come back from the assembly three months ago, but I haven’t seen or heard from him since, said Sergeant Bing.

"How odd..." Wu Wang muttered.

"Why is that so odd?" Shi Fa asked.

"I don’t know. It just feels weird when his presence is lacking, especially when he was always in the spotlight during his first year."

Suddenly, Sergeant Quang received a message, and when he read it, he muttered aloud, "Speaking of the devil... the General wants me to call him to her office."

"I’ll come with you, since we’ll be heading out afterward, anyway," said Wu Wang.

"Me too," said Sergeant Bing.

"I might as well..." Shi Fa said.

Shortly later, the four of them made their way to Yuan’s living quarters.

*Knock* *Knock*

Wu Wang knocked on the door.

"Is he not home?" he muttered when nobody answered the door.

He knocked again a moment later.

"..."

"What now?" Wu Wang turned to ask the others.

"Maybe he left on a mission?" Shi Fa remarked.

"I highly doubt the General would ask me to call him if she knew he went out on a mission," Sergeant Quang said.

"He’s probably sleeping in his room or something. Let’s go wake him up," Wu Wang said as he subconsciously reached for the doorknob without thinking about how he’d open the locked door.

However, the doorknob turned without issue, and he opened the door.

"The door... wasn’t locked?" Shi Fa frowned when he saw this.

Wu Wang cautiously pushed the door open, but it only moved halfway before something behind it stopped it from opening further.

"Huh?"

That was when they noticed the lower half of someone’s body lying on the floor behind the door.

"Y-Yuan?!"

Wu Wang swiftly entered the building, sliding through the gap.

"H-Hey! Someone call medical! He’s knocked out!" Wu Wang shouted from the inside.

Hearing this, Sergeant Quang picked up his phone and immediately called General Mei.

"What?" Mei Feng frowned upon hearing the news that Yuan was found unconscious in his own home, wondering if General Gu had done something again.

"There’s no way he’s that stupid... is he?" she muttered, summoning medical staff to his living quarters, as well as going there herself.

By the time Mei Feng arrived at Yuan’s living quarters, the medical staff had just put him on a stretcher and were prepared to take him away.

Mei Feng’s eyes widened with shock when she saw Yuan being taken away, as there were some unexpected changes to his appearance.

"What’s his condition?" she asked one of the medical personnel who had stayed behind.

"It’s a little puzzling," the medic replied. "His vitals are stable, and there doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with his body. At a glance, he seems perfectly healthy, yet for some reason, he remains unconscious. Until we conduct a more thorough examination, we won’t be able to determine what’s wrong."

"Keep me updated."

"Yes, General."

Once the medics left, Mei Feng turned her attention to Wu Wang and the others.

"What happened?"

Shi Fa explained everything from the moment they arrived at Yuan’s living quarters.

"What did the medics say?" Wu Wang later asked. "They wouldn’t disclose anything to us."

"They won’t know without a thorough examination, but they said his vitals and body were fine."

"Fine? Even though he... looked like that?" Wu Wang swallowed nervously.

Some time later, Mei Feng went to the hospital that Yuan was taken to and waited for the results.

A few hours and multiple examinations later—

"There’s nothing wrong with him?!" Mei Feng’s eyes widened at the news, her expression full of disbelief.

"A healthy individual doesn’t collapse and change so drastically!" she said.

"I don’t know what else to tell you, General. We couldn’t find anything wrong with his body."

"..."

"So what now?" Mei Feng asked after a moment of silence.

"We can only wait for him to wake up."

Mei Feng sighed, but there was nothing she could do.

After leaving the hospital, Mei Feng notified Supreme General Tian of the situation.

"Do you think foul play is possible?" Mei Feng asked.

"No."

Supreme General Tian answered swiftly and decisively, catching Mei Feng by surprise.

"I’ve had soldiers keeping an eye on him ever since we returned from the assembly. They reported that he went straight home after having his credentials upgraded, and no one has approached him since then."

"Perhaps it’s a side effect of his Perfected Heavenly Refinement physique," Supreme General Tian then said.

"Hopefully it turns out to be nothing..." Mei Feng sighed. "If he dies, I cannot imagine how the other cities would react, even if it wasn’t our fault."

As time passed, news of Yuan’s hospitalization spread throughout the military, giving rise to all sorts of new rumors and conspiracy theories.

"I bet it’s another assassination attempt on him..."

"How unlucky and unpopular is that guy to be targeted constantly?"

One month... two months...

Time passed swiftly, and in the blink of an eye, the military’s next recruitment period had already arrived.

"Did you hear? General Gu had apparently recruited some incredible talent!"

"How incredible are we talking? Unless they can beat Captain Yuan’s record, it’s nothing worth mentioning."

"Although they didn’t break any records yet, the recruitment hasn’t ended. Let’s go check it out."

People started going to watch the recruitment just to get a glimpse of this new talent.

"Wow! What a beauty!"

"Li Jieyu, huh? Isn’t that surname popular in a certain city?"

"I know of one background with that surname, and they’re a powerhouse in Ember City. But why would they send someone from a place like that to join our military?"

"It must be a coincidence."

"Check out that other beauty. Although she’s not quite as impressive as Li Jieyu, her performance would still be considered elite."

"Hey! I actually know that woman! But why is she here?!"

"Who is she?"

"She’s Huang Zi Han, the young lady of the Huang Family in Jade City! Her family is one of the wealthiest in the entire world!"

Eventually, people realized that many of the participants in this year’s recruitment had come from other cities. In fact, the number of applicants was among the highest in history, with a large majority coming from outside Gaia’s Heaven!
